“Sadly you aren’t at all equipped to speak about this type of stuff”

This is a cosmic level of irony.

          • Paul Genovese

Sure buddy, totally not like im a Unix admin :/

The thing is, you are comparing a kernel to an entire OS system, you never even said your distro, of course im gonna accuse you of not understanding the system when you can’t tell the difference from a kernel and a OS

          • Username

Dude, literally anyone can be a “unix admin”. It’s not like some promethean , high-IQ activity. Also, define “admin”. In the same sense, I’m a Windows admin.

As well, it’s almost like you’re implying being a “unix admin” is somehow above building PC’s. In my mind, neither are particulalry difficult. Sure, though, I guess this mind puzzle of a conversation somehow means I know little about computing. Sure. I’m not some power genious martian man, but I’ve discredited your point.

As well, dude, this isn’t of opinion. Linux is unilaterally an OS by definition. Again, read my response as it’s the definition. This isn’t semantics. As well, I guess you’ve just proved wrong the people who manage the Linux foundation itself. Sure thing.

        • Paul Genovese

Ligit I have been able to do basically everything on arch, also Linux isn’t a OS, its a kernel :/

          • Username

You’re joking, right? No way. No way whatsoever you’re serious.

From the website of Linux itself, and I quote; “Just like Windows,
iOS, and Mac, Linux is an operating system.

By the definition of “kernel”; “the kernel is a computer program
at the core of a computer’s operating system with complete control over everything in the system.”

A kernel is a component of the overall operating system. Every OS has a kernel. Linux’s kernel is just more available and easily-accessible.

Either way, I can’t imagine the logical hoops one must jump through to seriously call Linux “not an OS”. By every available definition of “operating system”, it is an OS, as it operates the system through a user interface, communicating between hardware and software.

If Linux weren’t an OS, I don’t know how you’d be replying to me.

          • Paul Genovese

Linux isn’t an OS because, if you were to boot linux into your memory (you can do this with grub commands but why?), even with initial ramdisks, you got nothing

Your root is what gives your PC life, the kernel can’t run without something to run, so if you just boot a linux image into memory, it can’t do literally anything,

The ‘system’ itself is the root, thats what the OS is, Linux doesn’t (usually) change by distro, but its still another OS

From literally every bit of information I’ve been researching here, nothing of what you’ve been saying has added up to me. I’ve as well not found a single article, forum post, etc. that flat-out says that Linux is not an OS. Everything I’ve found has stated explicitly that a kernel is a component of the OS and everything has suggested that Linux is indeed an OS:

            https://stackoverflow.com/questions/3315730/what-is-the-difference-between-the-operating-system-and-the-kernel

            https://www.geeksforgeeks.org/difference-between-operating-system-and-kernel/

            https://techdifferences.com/difference-between-kernel-and-operating-system.html

            https://duckduckgo.com/?t=ffab&q=is+linux+an+os&atb=v1-1&ia=web

What do you mean by “root”? The root directory? If so, I think I understand what you’re saying; that without integrated commands, nothing would communicate any operations in relation to the kernel or OS, so nothing could even begin to post as nothing could be communicated between various hardware, but, again, that does not necessarily differentiate the two, as it’s just another component of the overall OS. Again, a kernel is just a system of integrated control that one can access easily in many linux distros.

            https://duckduckgo.com/?t=ffab&q=is+linux+an+os&atb=v1-1&ia=web

The only pieces of information I’ve actually found relating to the idea are a total of two websites that present arguments on both sides without discovering any definitive answer. With not a total lack of self-awareness, nearly all agreeing that the fundamental premise of the question itself is a bit semantic and vague:

            https://unix.stackexchange.com/questions/506549/why-is-linux-not-an-operating-system

https://pupeno.com/2007/09/09/linux-is-not-an-operating-system/ (this one is funny, because their presented defining qualities that separate a kernel from an OS is as follows: “An operating system is for humans, a kernel is for programs” – which reinforces my point about linux being an OS as an OS supplies a GUI to display for user interaction, which Linux invariably does).

Funnily enough, irrespective of value, I found a homework study program that asks this exact question in multiple choice yet concludes from the softwares listed that Java is not an OS (lol).

Anyhow, what do you mean by “root”? The root directory? If so, I think I understand what you’re saying; that without integrated commands, nothing would communicate any operations in relation to the kernel or OS, so nothing could even begin to post past boot as nothing could be communicated between various hardware, but, again, that does not necessarily differentiate the two, as it’s just another component of the overall OS. Again, a kernel is just a system of integrated control that one can access easily in many linux distros.

DUDE. I GET WHAT YOU MEAN NOW. YOU MEAN L I N U X IS NOT AN OS. GNU/LINUX IS AN OS.

            GNU/LINUX

            AAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAA

          • Paul Genovese

haha sorry I replied to them all in liner order, so I didn’t read all your posts until now :p

Anyways, yeah, mainly the community replaces GNU/Linux with Linux, why? Well long story short, just “Linux” sounds better

When I say “Linux is not a OS”, im referring to Stallmans quote of “Linux is not an operating system”

The quote is pretty long, but you can find a bit here https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/GNU/Linux_naming_controversy

Basically its a name issue. I like to refer to “Linux” as just the kernel, as everything else wasn’t really made by the linux team

It basically is a big debate, but yeah, its gonna confuse you :p

        • Paul Genovese

In reality, you don’t have an issue with Linux, you have an issue with GNU/Linux based software,

And that’s kinda the point of Linux, find what works, Im very, very comfortable with my Arch/Gentoo setup, because IK what I need exactly to do what I do (Steam, Atom, emacs, pulseaudio, ect)

Many, and I mean, MANY distros have pre-installed software that fits the needs of most users, based on what they do

For example, headless debain is good for servers, Ubuntu is good for desktop users, ect. If that doesn’t fit your needs, you change the software,

You swap pulseaudio for alsa, or something else. There is a community for a reason, they dedicate so much time into getting you were you need too be

It took me, about 6 months – maybe a year, to find just the right mix of things I needed to give me the comfort I have today, but you know what? It was worth it too me, im the type who wants to have a computer thats not just, there for me

I want something that brings the upmost comfort to me, and Linux provided that

First off, I was purposefully being an ass. This is not serious business. I’ve nothing against Linux, and I hope more and more people begin to use it, refine it, and contribute to it’s availability and compatibility. Open source behooves us all, and an open source operating system is a phenomenal thing that automatically validates its existence in concept.

Second off, I would never deny that linux and it’s various or tangentially-related distro’s are useless.

Just like every operating system, they have their strengths and weaknesses. As well, just like any other, it’s very useful for what it does.

Again, my post was hyperbolic shitposting. Tounge-in-cheek, yet still somewhat accurate. If you’d like to carve away the cantankerousness, there’s points to be made.

  • fascists fucking hate disabled people. a good cartoon

    • Blarg Blarg

No, they (rightfully) hate degenerate people.
      You are never correct.

      • fascists think disabled people, among many other types of entirely good and valid people, are “degenerate” because they fucking hate disabled people. a good comment

        • Kuraudo

Having compassion for those less fortunate and thinking they’re just as good as a fully enabled human being are two separate things.

          • not that it matters, since fascists do not do either of those things.

          • Todd Planck

Yeah, National Socialism has such a wonderful track record of compassion for the “less fortunate.” You can just smell all that compassion for us wafting right off the Aktion T4 order lel

          • Kilátó

Actually that (and sterilizations) specifically targeted the mentally disabled, not the “less fortunate” in general. At least in practice. They weren’t gassing the blind or physically handicapped or like that.
Of course one can say that they could have been the next, and it wouldn’t contradict NS ideology, rather it would have been the logical outcome of it (they talked much about eliminating hereditary illnesses etc – it all came from eugenics, which actually was championed by US and UK progressives of the time, including some big names who are still respected by Lefties, eugenics only became unfashionable in prog circles after it was associated with the Nazis), but it did not happen.

          • Todd Planck

While you’re absolutely right that mentally disabled people were a large part of the people sterilized, and killed in Aktion T4 and its aftermath, they were definitely killing the blind, deaf, and physically handicapped (especially if racially or politically undesirable). The first person authorized for killing was a physically disabled baby.

Physically and mentally disabled people were killed because anything we needed presumably should go to real people, and also allegedly for our own good and the good of the gene pool, even though no disabled person petitioned for “euthanasia” and nobody was super, uh, thorough, in deciding who would actually pass on a disability and who wouldn’t.

….anyway, this is a tangent which I go on only because I have a special interest in this topic. Sorry.

What it seems you are saying is that eugenics is not just National Socialist, German, or politically “right”, and that’s very true. Eugenics was indeed seen as progressive, was very popular among US scientists and doctors and popularized by them, and one US doctor’s response to the Nazi sterilization law was, “The Germans are beating us at our own game.” Germany only went as crazy with it as some American scientists wanted to go but couldn’t, gassing included.

            Several points about this, though:

            1. A fascist government with little freedom of speech, press, etc, allows for fewer checks on the head of state doing shit that the general population is not in support of, such as partyvanning their disabled family members and gassing, starving, or ODing them lol

            2. When the dominant ideology is rooted in ideas of superiority and inferiority, thinking of other humans as less than human–ballast/useless eaters/life unworthy of life/empty shells–it becomes much easier to kill, hurt, or turn a blind eye (har har) to their misery. And it affected doctors as well, who were encouraged to see the HIppocratic Oath as outdated and the Volk as a whole as their “patient.” “You’re not killing people who don’t want to die! You’re killing social and economic problems.”

All of these are specifically National Socialist issues that are likely to lead to horrible outcomes for the disabled. Also, eugenics is shitty wherever it shows up.

          • Maxim Sukharev

The T4 meme didn’t exterminate, nor “sterilize” any of the disabled people. The germans simply didn’t financially support life of a completely disabled ill people that have no hope left, simply leaving the financial support to the family of the ill person to take care of said person themselves.

I know it’s very hard to believe, but they actually had a pretty huge social programs of that time. I may disagree with it, but it did work well for that time period.

      • Paul Genovese

They….good lord you people are horrible
